Philosophy of risk

The assessment and management of risk gives rise to a wide range of philosophical issues. There are important connections between risk studies and philosophical sub-disciplines such as ethics, theory of knowledge, philosophy of science, philosophy of technology, philosophy of probability, decision theory, and philosophy of economics.

Risk studies in all of these areas are conducted in the division. One of its major research areas is the ethics of risk and safety, that includes research issues such as: How are risk assessment and risk management affected by ethical considerations? On what ethical grounds can a risk be considered to be acceptable? Do we need to adjust traditional ethical theories in order to make them deal adequately with issues of risk?
