Projects

Projects are either of a theoretical, systems, or application nature. Students should work in groups on the project -- in rare cases an individual may work on a project, but only if it is theoretical. Groups may have a maximum of 4 students, but the group must elect a group leader who is the contact person of the group. In turn group leaders must, before 17.00 CET April 10, 2015, send an email to the minock@kth.se that follows exactly the following form:

-------------------------------------------

To: minock@kth.se
From: GROUP LEADER
CC: ALL GROUP MEMBERS
Subject: [DD2471] Project Proposal

Title: TITLE OF PROJECT

Leader's Name: GROUP LEADER NAME
Member2 Name: MEMBER2 NAME
Member3 Name: MEMBER3 NAME
...

Related paper: (see below)
Presentation Day: (either May 20 or May 25)

Model: LE or ES or BS

Abstract: ... this may be maximum of 250 words!

Finally attach ONLY the pdf of the related paper.

----------------------------------

Observe word limits!!!. 'LE','ES' and 'BS' are defined at the bottom of this page and require careful consideration.

The related paper must be from VLDB, SIGMOD, PODS, ICDT, ICDE or EDBT. No exceptions!

A 'related paper' is, well..., a paper that is directly related to your project. If you can't find such a paper in these main database conferences, then your project is out of scope for the course.

On April 14, 2015 the course instructor will form groups on his own among unassigned students. These groups will operate under the LE model and have very challenging objectives described in quickly formulated abstracts. Each student in these groups will also be docked 100 points as a 'management fee' for this service.

Groups carry throough their projects and present on their assigned presentation day (May 20 or May 25). Groups will present their project in 15-20 minute presentation + 5-10 minutes of questions. All students must attend at least one of these days, and fill in evaluation reports on projects presented that day. Students not attending one of the presentation sessions and filling out evaluation reports on all projects of that day (except their own), will be charged a fine of 100 points.

Group leaders must, before May 29, 2015 at 17.00 send in a 4 page project report as pdf. Use Springer LNCS format. For an example to emulate, see. All members of groups will be charged a fine of 100 points every working day the report is late.

Using the project and presentation evaluation reports as input, the instructor will determine how many points each project is awarded. This will consist of a base number of points awarded to every project member, plus an extra pool of points that may be divided among group members. Under the 'LE' (locked egalitarian) and 'ES' (egalitarian system} models, this will be an equal distribution to all project members. Under the 'BS' (bonus system) model, points may be distributed in unequal proportions at the discretion of the group leader. Note that a group under 'ES' may change their model (at any time before the end of the course) to the 'BS' if a majority of members agree (ties decided by group leaders). The 'LE' model is locked and may not be changed.
