This is a bi-weekly reading group of the Robotics, Perception and Learning Lab at CSC, KTH, covering state-of-the-art methods in robotics. We meet every second Monday on Zoom (https://kth-se.zoom.us/j/64003344425).

Upcoming sessions, and the voting / proposal system can be found here.

The new RRG format (from HT 2020)

Background: We aim for our students to 1) feel the breadth of robotics and cover topics they would not look for otherwise, 2) get in-depth understanding of some new techniques relevant to their own research, 3) get in touch with the most recent state of the art, 4) learn how to look for relevant papers, recognize the good ones, how to read papers, and distill the main take-aways, 5) learn how to present, 6) learn how to critique a paper.

Implementation: We will run 4 types of sessions with some periodicity: breadt, depth, hot-stuff and review. See the information page for more details.

A note on paper selection: Participants propose papers themselves. A paper proponent should be fond of the paper and able to argue why others should read it, too.We should be reading “good” papers, i.e.

  • Impactful, original, and/or elegant
  • Clearly written
  • Appropriately supported with experiments.

Each paper we read should be “very interesting” to at least 3 people in the reading group. Propose and vote for papers here: Upcoming sessions, and the voting / proposal system can be found here.

To pass the course (PhD students only):

New participants: You need to collect “budget” of at least 160 hours (equals budget of 6 hp).  See the information page for more details what types of sessions and what budget we have. You have to be a leader in at least one breadth, one depth, one hot-stuff and one review session. For instance, you can be a leader in one of each session type (16 + 16 + 16 + 24 = 72 hours) and a follower in 15 other sessions. Or, you can for instance, decide to be a leader in two of each session type (144 hours) and a follower in 3 other sessions, or, you can go for a leader in 5+1+1+1 and follower in 4 sessions, etc.

Continuing participants: Previous requirements said at least 2 presentations and at least 24 participations. If you started in this system, you can finish in this system (presentation = being a leader in breadth or depth session). You are also most welcome to choose to switch to the new “budget” system. Your past presentations count as 16 hours and your past participations as 6.

If you need to get reminded what you have completed so far, ask Fereidoon.

When you want your grade to be reported, work with Fereidoon to collect the information, fill out the following mini-form in plain text and send to Jana (tumova@kth.se). Year and period is when you started, examination date is when you finished.

A note on other reading groups:

There are some voluntary reading groups popping up from time to time: for instance, recently, Chris Pek was organizing one on safe reinforcement learning. Participation in these can be counted as leader/follower in breadth or depth sessions this course, subject to the following:

  • The group is organized, mentored, and/or monitored by a postdoc or a faculty; this person communicates with the examiner of this course (currently Jana) to get things reported for the participants.
  • The group has at least 6-7 regular members

The official page for the course is found here: DD3316.

If you want to join the reading group, or have any other questions please contact Fereidoon.
