"It is easy to ask professors for further explanations and help"

Andreas comes from Norway. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Stavanger, and during spare time he likes to run, to be outdoors and to socialise.

What made you choose Stockholm and KTH for your studies?
For me, KTH was the best alternative for my master’s degree. I wanted to continue my studies in the Nordic countries, and because of KTH’s excellent ratings (top engineering school in Scandinavia), my decision fell on KTH. In addition, the mechanical department of KTH is well recognised around the globe.

It is fair to say that I had high hopes for the school, and I believe my expectations have been more than met at KTH. What I consider as a bonus when studying at KTH, is that the campus is in the middle of Stockholm.

Stockholm is a beautiful city which has something for everyone. You can find hipster areas in Södermalm, and regular city living in all the other parts of town. This suits me perfectly because after school there is always something to do.

What do you like most about KTH?
All the professors at KTH are very outgoing, and it is easy to ask for further explanations and help. If the professor is unable to help you, there are great teacher’s assistants available at your service.

The courses are very modern, and most of the courses in engineering mechanics have some computational exercises in them. I believe this prepares me for a working career as a mechanical engineer, where simulation tools are becoming increasingly used in all industries.

What are your impressions of Stockholm and Sweden?
As a Norwegian, Sweden and Stockholm is quite similar to Norway. However, what I have noticed in Stockholm is the diversity. There are more nationalities, languages and cultures. I find this very interesting, and my friends here in Stockholm come from all around the globe.

Swedes, in general, are kind and helpful, and their English is excellent. For students not speaking Swedish, I believe this is a great plus. Several different organizations are arranging events every week. If you have a long-lost hobby, there is a group practising this in Stockholm.

What do you like most about being here?
I like the school, city and life balance here in Stockholm and at KTH. By studying in central Stockholm, nothing is stopping you from going out for an after work or to the cinema.

The countryside around Stockholm is great and a perfect place to spend lazy weekends. The archipelago is famous for its beauty, and I highly recommend going kayaking or biking there. There are great local cafés in Stockholm, and the Swedes love “Fika”. Fika is coffee and cakes, which is a great way to experience Swedish culture.

What is your best memory so far from your time at KTH?
Autumn at KTH is very beautiful. The climbing plants covering the old stone buildings change colour, which makes it an amazing sight. During hectic exam periods, this surely helps our motivation.

The first snowfall last year was amazing as well. People were making snowmen in the courtyard, throwing snowballs and slipping everywhere. It is really inspiring to see people see snow for the first time, and this made me very happy. I saw the joy they were experiencing and remembered my childhood playing in the snow.

What do you think are the differences between studying at KTH and your home university?

The biggest difference between KTH and other universities is that KTH has a hands-on approach to teaching and the learning curriculum. All courses have some laboratory exercises or group work, which I believe is a great way to learn more of what the engineering profession is all about.

As I said earlier, the professors are very outgoing and kind. I feel that I am learning something new, or a new approach to a familiar problem every day at KTH. Previous studies have focused more on individual learning. By focusing on practical studies and teams, I think the students are more prepared for their future careers.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for Master’s studies?

If you are uncertain, I can assure you that the educational level is very high. But, good universities are found everywhere. What is special about KTH is the surroundings. Googling images of “Gamla Stan”, “Djurgarden” or “Gröna Lund at night” should convince you that Stockholm and KTH is a very good, interesting and beautiful place to commence your studies.

I hope to see you at KTH, and if you have any questions feel free to send me an email and I will do my best to answer all your questions.
