Sports analysis with depth camera motion capture system

Finite element (FE) models are a powerful tool to study head injury mechanisms. However, injury predictions highly depend on the accuracy of the simulations' inputs.

Accurate loading inputs such as velocity, acceleration, and angular velocity are critical for reliable injury predictions. Depth camera motion capture system offers a solution for obtaining the above parameters; especially the contactless tracking minimizes the interference to the subjects being tracked.

A prototype and workflow for validating the accuracy of the depth camera have been established in previous work. The goal of this project is to further develop and optimize the system to make it applicable for capturing human motion in real sports, e.g., boxing, football. Challenges to be solved include sampling rate, joint occlusions, imaging noise. Reconstructions of sports accidents will be then performed using advanced FE models for a deeper understanding of head injury mechanisms and thus injury prevention.
