LEA Workshop
On October 10, 2025, leading experts from academia and industry gathered for a full-day event organized by the LEA project (Lens-Enhanced Antenna Arrays for mm-Wave Communications). SweWIN participated actively in the day, through its director Emil Björnson, who presented the center to the 36 participants who took part in the event. The SweWIN area leader (area 1) Oscar Quevedo was the main organizer of the event. The area leader Cicek Cavdar participated also in the event, representing the SMART 6GSAT project.
The LEA project is a partnership between KTH, Ericsson and Northern Waves. It is funded by Vinnova (budget of 5.9 million SEK) and aims to investigate how the combination of lens antennas and phased arrays can enhance the performance and efficiency of the latter compared to when the antenna arrays are used alone, as well as, to analyze the industrial potential of such solutions.
The event opened with introductions from several key research centers, including LEA, SEE-6GIA, SweWIN, and SMART 6GSAT, providing context for their roles in advancing 6G technologies. The morning sessions focused on advanced antenna solutions, featuring presentations from researchers on fundamental topics such as 3D Ray Tracing-Physical Optics (RT-PO) modeling and the design of Dielectric Lenses to enhance Active Phased Array Antennas. In this context, Northern Waves showcased manufacturing opportunities in Additive Manufacturing for these advanced lens array antennas.
The afternoon sessions shifted focus to broader industrial and defense challenges. Experts from Ericsson provided an outlook on the key challenges in 6G Terrestrial Communications. Further industrial engagement included insights from Medeso on simulation tools used in Electromagnetic (EM) design and a presentation from Acconeer detailing lens antenna design for radar sensors. A representative from SAAB highlighted future challenges and requirements within the defense sector. The program concluded with a dedicated poster session, allowing attendees from all organizations to network and discuss recent research results, synthesizing the day's discussions across core areas of antenna innovation, industrial application, and long-term security needs.
