Courses and Training

The Rail Vehicles unit is responsible for the courses centered on Rail Vehicles Engineering and is involved as teachers and assistants in a number of other courses related to Vehicle Dynamics, Active Systems and Project Courses.

The following courses are currently being offered at the unit of Rail Vehicles

SD2221 Vehicle System Technology

Vehicle System Technology gives you knowledge of ground vehicle systems as well as the role of vehicles in the extended transport system and society. The aim of the course is to give the student a basic knowledge of both road and rail vehicle design and performance.

SD2307 Rail Vehicle Technology

Rail Vehicle Technology gives an extensive overview to rail vehicles and their technical basis while students design a commuter-type train in a course-long project task. The lectures and the project task advance in parallel throughout the course, on a weekly basis, thus ensuring that the technical aspects used in the design of the vehicle are available to the students throughout the lectures and online recordings. Additionally, the course offers an optional study visit to the SJ Hagalund depot, to allow you to see and feel how different rail vehicles are; linking theory and simulations from the course to real life engineering practices.

SD2313 Rail Vehicle Dynamics

This course teaches vehicle dynamics for rail vehicles, including the interaction of the vehicle with the track. The aim of the course is to prepare to work as a vehicle dynamics engineer in the industry or for railway operators/authorities. The topic has become increasingly important due to the need for faster and heavier trains. Over the period of the course, you will become familiar to the different problems involved in dynamic vehicle-track interaction and become capable of actively choosing system properties that result in good vehicle performance and limited damage to vehicle and track components.

SD2231 Applied Vehicle Dynamics Control

This course deals with the various applications active systems for vehicle dynamics control. The aim of this course is to give students both theoretical and practical experience of different vehicle dynamics control applications during three 2.5 weeks laboratory assignments. At the end of the course students will have gained knowledge and experience in three different areas of vehicle dynamics control: longitudinal, lateral and vertical directions.

SD231X Degree Project in Rail Vehicle Engineering

The degree project consists of an individual assignment with a topic that is decided by the examiner. It should constitute a specialisation within the chosen field of technology and be at the level of second-cycle studies. The degree project should correspond to 20 weeks of full-time studies and be concluded with a written report and an oral presentation at an open seminar. All the Degree Projects in Rail Vehicles participate in a set of seminars that allow the students and supervisors to give and get feedback from their colleagues, improving the overall quality of the individual projects.

SD2229 and SD2230 Vehicle Dynamics Project Part 1 and Part 2

This course is designed to give the students an opportunity to use their knowledge gained during the past courses on real life projects connected to vehicle technology or vehicle dynamics for both road and rail vehicles. The students have certain freedom to choose the project that they would like to participate in, where each project group consists of 3-10 students, depending on the project size. The project proposals come from either industrial partners or from research projects at KTH where there is a clear need to analyse a problem and develop engineering solutions.

SD2320 Challenge-based Railway Systems Design

In the course students will be presented with a mobility challenge that can be solved with railways, and they will engage with its stakeholders in the different interactions and contradictions involved in the vehicle-infrastructure-operation system, including the interference in design requirements from the different stakeholders in both the railwayand the wider transport system.

Training

In addition to offering rail vehicle related courses for students, our unit is also engaged in providing training courses for engineers already working in the field of railway engineering. Such courses could be for both national and international groups of engineers. The national training courses, often, are more of a general railway nature and hosted by the KTH Railway Group.
