Om mig

I am Professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, where I lead the Manufacturing and Metrology Systems unit and direct a research centre in advanced manufacturing.

Alongside my research and teaching, I am President of the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (euspen).

Education

  • 2011 – Ph.D. in Machine and Process Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology
  • 2007 – M.Sc. (Civilingenjör) in Mechanical Engineering, with a focus on Mechatronics, KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Research intresset

My research focuses on improving the reliability and performance of advanced dynamic systems through precision engineering, integrated metrology and mechatronics. A central part of my work is understanding how complex mechanicalvand mechatronic systems behave and developing methods to measure, model, calibrate, and improve their performance.

My main research areas include advanced machinery and robotics, particularly machine tools and articulated robots. The work covers measurement and modelling, calibration and compensation, dynamic performance, sensor systems, measurement uncertainty and traceability. Applications range from precision manufacturing to biomedical robotics, including robotic systems for surgery and orthopaedics.

I have a particular interest in the design and development of novel measurement instruments and metrology systems, combining mechanical design, sensors, mechatronics, measurement principles, and data analysis.

What particularly interests me is how the same fundamental principles of precision engineering and metrology can address very different challenges: from improving the accuracy and reliability of machine tools and robots, to developing measurement systems for biomedical applications and meeting the demanding precision requirements of large-scale scientific facilities.

Precision engineering and precision manufacturing

Today, research in precision-driven manufacturing and metrology spans a wide spectrum, from large components in the aerospace, automotive, and energy industries to micro/nano fabrication for semiconductor or medical industries. Moreover, precision engineering plays a vital role in ensuring the quality of various products, including wafers in lithography, medical devices, and optical equipment. We can see examples of precision manufacturing and metrology in large-scale science projects, such as the alignment of cryomagnets at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) for gravitational research, or the James Webb whose 132 actuators position the mirrors with 10 nanometer accuracy. But we can also perceive its impact on daily goods, for example in the fabrication of moulds for contact lenses and its posterior measurement and quality assurance.

Robotics for biomedical applications

I am currently involved in research collaborations with the University of Tokyo on robotics for scientific exploration, with applications in the biomedical field, and with Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital on robotics for orthopaedic applications. You can hear more about some of this research in a feature from Swedish Science Radio.
