Léa-Catherine Szacka: "Venice Architecture Biennale" (Oct 9)

In the late 1970s and out of an identity crisis, the Venice Biennale, an institution that had existed since 1895, decided to include architecture, first as part of the visual arts, and later as an independent discipline. Since then, architecture have played many roles at the Biennale, yet often remaining mere illustration of built or planned work. This year, with Fundamentals, OMA/Rem Koolhaas have triggered polemics by dedicating the entire show to research rather than representation. In this lecture, I will talk about my participation to the Monditalia section at 14th Venice Architecture Biennale, while contextualising this experience in the general history of the institution, questioning the role of this showcase within the discipline and beyond. 

 is a postdoctoral research fellow at the (OCCAS). After studying architecture at Université de Montréal and Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV), she completed a PhD in Architectural history and theory at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London, with a thesis on the history of the Venice Architecture Biennale.
