R-sens - Sensor system for rail

Background

The project aims to investigate technical solutions for determining the position of wagons and identifying wagon movements on marshalling yards be means of RFID readers and movement sensors. There are currently limited systems for automatic carriage identification and position determination. However, a developed energy- and cost efficient system could be of great benefit, as it can provide support in planning, dimensioning of infrastructure and monitoring of railway yards. The system would also be a key component in an automatic ranging system solution.

Purpose and goal

R-sens target is to develop tracking tools for improving the monitoring of traffic in the rail system, in particular marshalling yards, industrial tracks and cargo wagons. The aims is to improve the maintenance planning for the tracks and also to identify/position cargo wagons for specific operators.

Expected outcome

R-sens will deliver a system proposal (report) together with design and testing of critical components.

Planned approach and implementation

The research work will focus on the technical design of the RFID-reader, sensor network (6lowPAN) and communication (NBIoT). This includes development of dedicated hardware and software. The units will be outdoor proof. The tests and demonstrations are executed in several phases.

Duration

Autumn 2019 to autumn 2022
