EMC laboratory

A reverberation chamber can be used, and indeed has been used, for testing communication equipment and characterization of dielectric materials in time- and frequency domain, high voltage breakdown tests, thermal ageing tests and antenna research.

The lab has good equipment for creating and controlling complicated electromagnetic environment and the potential use ranges from EMC testing (wherein a huge range of potential objects exists) to Radio communication and antenna research. A GTEM cell is used to test the immunity of systems in a very controlled fashion as the applied electromagnetic field is well defined (plane wave). To create such a well-defined electromagnetic wave, this equipment is very useful. A fast transient source is used to create a very fast voltage pulse which in itself can be used to test equipment or in application where a fast trigger signal is needed. Rise time of the voltage pulse is about 1 μs.

Equipment and instrumentation

  • Reverberation chamber. The RC is used to test the immunity of electronic equipment as well as characterize the emission of said systems.
  • GTEM cell, this is used to test the immunity of systems in a very controlled fashion as the applied electromagnetic field is well defined (plane wave).
  • Transient source, used to create a very fast voltage pulse which in itself can be used to test equipment or in application where a fast trigger signal is needed. Rise time of the voltage pulse is about 1 μs.
  • UWB transient source, same as above but faster. Rise time of the voltage pulse is about 100 ps.
