The role of railways in a future electrified and automated transport system

When many people talk about electrification for road, air and water transport, it is easy to forget that the railway has already been electrified for over a hundred years. The EU has clear goals for how the railway should be an obvious part of the transition to a sustainable and efficient transport system and emphasizes the importance of "modal shift" in its directives. This presupposes that the modes of transport are used together where they make the greatest benefit so that people and goods can be transported with as small a climate footprint and environmental impact as possible.

The seminar will present visions and technical solutions for a transport system where rail transport interacts with other modes of transport. Examples from activities within other modes of transport will be presented that may provide inspiration for collaboration or adaptation within the railway system.
