Using the tools of philosophy, Mateusz Sosnowski examines the underlying values behind equivalent and satisfactory fire risk management. For those working in fire services and related organizations, this represents a new way of thinking and working.

Mateusz Sosnowski is a fire safety and risk management engineer at Södertörn Fire Department Association. He is also an industry funded doctoral student at the Department of philosophy and history, in collaboration with Brandforsk –Swedish Fire Research Foundation.

“I investigate how fundamental values influence or should influence fire risk management, so that government agencies, municipalities, rescue services, and politicians can work together to create equivalent and satisfactory protection, no matter where you live in Sweden,” he explains in a newly produced short film.

Risk profiles vary across different parts of the country.

“Today, it is the municipalities, through their local self-government, that determine whether we have a satisfactory level or not. Even within the geographical boundaries of Södertörn Fire Department Association, we face different challenges in rural areas, archipelagos, and large cities. But in the end, we must, in one way or another, provide equivalent and satisfactory protection. Research will help us answer whether we actually do that,” says Henrik Lindström, Chief of Rescue Services at Södertörn Fire Department Association.
