The International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of P.R. China is conferred on foreigners or foreign organizations that have made important contribution to China’s science and technology undertaking.

Licheng Sun is a professor in organic chemistry at KTH and conducts research primarily within the field of artificial photosynthesis, which is how to convert solar energy to chemical energy. NOSTA stresses his contributions to the design and synthesis of molecular catalysts, which can split water to oxygen and hydrogen very quickly.

Over the past 18 years, Licheng Sun has promoted the scientific collaborations between Sweden, China and other countries, which according to NOSTA has made a great contribution to the improvement of research and education in China, particularly within fundamental research of artificial photosynthesis. He has built up the "Joint Education and Research Center on Molecular Devices" at the Dalian University of Technology and KTH where he, together with colleagues from the Chinese university, has conducted intensive research collaborations in the fields of artificial photosynthesis. He has also created a channel for personnel and students exchange and training between China and Sweden and has participated in organizing several international symposia on solar fuels and solar cells.
