The measurement and reporting of companies’ sustainability efforts have undergone significant development over recent decades. The practice has evolved from voluntary, often qualitative and narrative reporting to increasingly regulated and quantitative reporting. Sustainability reporting differs in several ways from its financial counterpart, which also entails specific challenges. For example, social norms regarding what constitutes ethical behavior change over time, and, as Milton Friedman already questioned, who has the right to determine what constitutes ethical business practice? On the environmental side, calculations of otherwise invisible performance variables—such as carbon dioxide emissions and chemical substances—are to a large extent dependent on the natural sciences and their ongoing efforts to understand these complex issues. How do companies navigate and make decisions based on this type of data? In this docent lecture, the challenges and opportunities arising from the development of sustainability reporting are discussed, with specific examples drawn from the author’s own research.
