Lisa Ericsson, Head of KTH Innovation. Since five or six years ago, the term deep tech has been used more and more in different contexts - but what exactly is it?

“It is a collective term and is often used when talking about research-based start-up companies that use pioneering research to tackle complex issues, often major societal challenges, where the research is complex, takes a long time and there is a long way to the market. These companies often have the potential to change several different industries from the ground up. This is in contrast to start-up companies that have a clear product or solution where the time from idea to market is much shorter.”

Deep tech can be divided into eight different platforms according to a survey conducted by Vinnova of how Sweden stands in terms of deep tech. How is KTH doing?

“Very good. We are the best in Sweden in six of these areas and have a prominent role when you look at patents, publications and start-ups. But we can definitely do more, become clearer by also exploring and developing the interface between academia and start-ups. “

“It is important that we dare to harbour the complex solutions longer in academia, not hesitating to go back to the lab if necessary, before entering the market.”

Deep tech thus requires a deep understanding of research and science and is emerging. But internationally, many other countries have come further, according to Vinnova's report. What is the reason for this?

“The Swedish system has not really been rigged for this type of company so far, but has instead leaned back on the success we have had in building more digital companies. Deep tech It requires an understanding of the logic of deep tech companies, more capital, increased boldness and at the same time patience.”

How does KTH Innovation work with this?

“We have actually been working with deep tech for many years, but the understanding from the innovation ecosystem has previously been relatively low. We are now investing more and will work to strengthen and deepen our support for deep tech over the next year.”

Is there a Swedish expression for deep tech?

“There are some attempts at Swedish names, such as emerging technology solutions or companies based on groundbreaking research. But having said that, there is probably more focus on how it should be written; deeptech, deep tech, Deep Tech.....? ?”

  • Artificial Intelligence & Data
  • Cleaner Energy
  • Pollution and Waste Management
  • Industrial Biotech
  • Advanced Materials
  • Robotics & Communication
  • Quantum Computing
  • Life Science.
