Five startups in European collaboration for urban mobility

KTH is a part of five consortia of the prestigious EU collaboration European institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) that aims to make Europe a global leader for innovation within strategic areas. The consortia EIT Urban Mobility is a Knowledge & Innovation Community (KIC) focusing on future transports and new solutions needed to meet the challenges such as the global goals for sustainable development.

- The EIT Urban Mobility consortia consists of a large amount of partners relevant to the mobility field and amongst them about 30 cities across Europe, says Siimon Vaske, Business Development Coach at KTH Innovation. We hope that this strong network can prove useful and accelerate, up and coming new technologies and start-ups that can impact our society and environment positively. 

Chosen in tough competition

January 11th marks the beginning of Batch 2 of the EIT Urban Mobility Accelerator Program, a 6-month program for promising European startups within mobility. Five teams will join Innovation Hub North, run by KTH Innovation together with the City of Stockholm, Aalto University, Aalto Startup Center, and the City of Helsinki. Simultaneously, 20 other startups in the East, West, South and Central parts of Europe start the program. The startups were selected among over 250 applications from all over Europe and associated countries.

The accepted teams will benefit from financial support, mentoring, coaching, expert workshops, free office space, access to local ecosystems and infrastructure, and a lot more provided by the acceleration partners in the five Innovations Hubs.

Gordian Logistics Optimisation Systems

Gordian is a DeepTech software startup founded by researchers at KTH supported by KTH Innovation. Gordian makes transport planning easy and effective by untangling millions of movement traces. Their products are based on proprietary movement data analytics and AI. They provide benefits to their customers by making planning easy, interactive, and evidence-based. Plans derived with their products are up to five times more cost-effective than those of their competitors and can result in savings of megatons in CO2-emissions or billions of Euros in costs.

InnoBrain

With the introduction of autonomous and teleoperated vehicles, drivers are either removed or they control the vehicles from distance. That brings two main challenges during product development and surveillance: 1) Tracking drivers’ performance in teleoperated situations and 2) subjective assessment of vehicles from the passengers’ perspective. InnoBrain offers a Neuro-AI based platform to directly track and evaluate the cognitive and emotional status of teleoperation drivers as well as passengers. InnoBrain was founded by KTH researchers and has previously been supported by KTH Innovation.

Peregrine Technologies

Peregrine Technologies is a Berlin-based AI technology company that is improving road safety and minimising CO2 emissions in cities. By deriving context from real-time traffic scene imagery, they prevent and avoid the likelihood of high-risk events in traffic. They automatically remove personal information in imagery, e.g. faces and license plates, making their service GDPR compliant. Peregrine is set out to support drivers and fleet operators to save lives and money.

The world’s first urban mobility app specifically targeted at the travel and tourism market: They empower their users with a “Global Oystercard and Journey Planner”. They grant access to multiple public transport networks and low carbon modes of transport, so their customers can explore cities with confidence and, at the same time, fight climate change.
