Courses for exchange students
Exchange students in all subject areas, except Architecture, make an individual course selection, with more than 1,000 master's level courses in English to choose from.
As an exchange student you apply to the KTH school where you will study most or all of your courses. You should select courses of 30 ECTS per semester of which the majority of the credits should come from the study area that you are nominated within through your university's agreement with KTH. You must also meet the admission requirements for each course.
Please note:
- Exchange students within Architecture have a set study plan, tailored for students to make the most out of their exchange.
- Double degree and dual master students have an individual or fixed study plan within a programme at KTH that needs to be approved by the responsible programme director.
Some courses are limited in the number of places offered and there is no guarantee that you can take these courses. It is important that you take part of the information regarding limitations and prerequisites on each course page before you select a course.
Courses for exchange students within Architecture
Please note that KTH and your home university need to have a specific exchange agreement within the subject area of architecture for you to be able to take courses in architecture at KTH. If you are an exchange student in Architecture, you need to have finalised three years of studies before applying to KTH. You will follow a set study plan with courses at the Department of Architecture.

Language of instruction and language courses
The main language of instruction on bachelor's level (year 1-3) is Swedish and the main language of instruction on master's level (year 4-5) is English. Nevertheless, Swedish language courses are offered - and recommended - to get an introduction to Swedish society and culture.
If you have some knowledge in Swedish and choose to follow a course given in Swedish, it should be noted that normally a considerable proportion of the course literature is in English and the teaching staff can be expected to have a good command of English.
Language recommendation
KTH does not ask for any results from official language tests, however we strongly recommend that students applying for exchange studies at KTH have a proficiency of English equivalent to the European B2 level.

Credits and grades
The European Credit Transfer System, ECTS, is used at KTH. One week of full-time studies (40 hours including lectures, individual studies, etc.) is equivalent to 1,5 ECTS credits. One academic year equals 60 ECTS credits and one semester equals 30 ECTS credits. The grading scale goes from A (excellent), B (very good), C (good), D (satisfactory), E (sufficient) to F/FX (fail). A distinction is made between the grades FX and F that are used for unsuccessful examinations. FX means: “fail- some more work required to pass” and F means: “fail – considerable further work required”.
KTH Department of Architecture does not apply the ECTS grading scale (A-E) in the examination of courses and projects. Students are only graded “P” for pass and “F” for fail.
