Melita

Hi, I’m Melita and I am from India but I mostly grew up in Mozambique. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Business Management at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal, India. Currently, I’m diving deeper into the energy sector through my studies at KTH where I get to combine my engineering background with my passion for sustainable solutions.
In my free time, you’d see me learning a new dance move or sleeping in a park with my friends when the weather is good.

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?

I wanted to focus on the energy sector within the scope of chemical engineering. KTH is one of the few universities that offer a programme like this and it felt like the perfect fit for my interests and career goals. The programme gives me the flexibility of exploring different sustainable energy solutions while also having a huge focus on core chemical engineering principles - which I did not want to move far from. The courses cover a wide range of topics, from the production of biofuels and energy storage to the purification of drinking water and exhaust gases. This holistic approach makes it possible to gain knowledge across the entire value chain, from raw material to final product, which is something that I was looking for.

What are the best aspects of your programme?

There are a variety of courses to choose from that makes it easy to focus on exactly what you want to learn. The programme is designed with a practical approach to learning. Almost every course I’ve had so far had at least one study visit to a relevant industry. There are group projects in every course that not only helps to understand the course material better but has also taught me to appreciate different perspectives, since everyone brings their own unique viewpoint. The course workload never felt like it was more than I could manage which makes it easy to handle academics with a student life.

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

KTH has a period-based education system, where each semester is divided into two study periods. Thus, you complete four separate study periods in a year. During my first year of the Master’s programme, I took two courses each period. This structure really helped me focus deeply on each course. In my previous university, when I was taking six courses per semester, I didn’t have the chance to explore the subjects in as much depth as I wanted. I also find the studies at KTH to be more practical, with a strong emphasis on project work within courses, including both group and individual projects.

How is student life in Stockholm?

Stockholm has a little something for everyone. I’ve always been someone who dives into way more than just academics, whether it’s joining student clubs, taking on random personal challenges or saying yes to things that push me out of my comfort zone. Thanks to KTH’s well-balanced academic system, there is plenty of time to explore the city and try out new hobbies, whether you're into sports, art, discovering new places or joining fun activities. There is plenty of opportunity to join student clubs within KTH as well. You have a variety of options from joining a rowing team or even learning how to DJ. Stockholm has a vibrant international student community so you get to meet people from all over the world and truly feel part of a diverse and welcoming environment.

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?

I’ve really loved every part of my time at KTH so far. I’ve had the chance to learn from professors who make me feel even more passionate about what I’m learning. Being here has helped me grow more independent, both academically and personally and I’ve met some amazing people along the way. I have also gotten a taste of what it’s like to work in an international environment and it’s been incredibly rewarding. The experience has challenged me in the best ways and continues to shape me into the professional I want to become.
