Lucía
Lucía is from Spain. Before coming to Sweden, she completed her bachelor’s degree in Physics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. She is currently pursuing the master’s programme in Engineering Physics, specialising in Biomedical Physics. She is passionate about travelling and meeting people from different cultures, and in her free time she enjoys reading, photography, and spending time with friends, often exploring new places around the city.
Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
During my undergraduate studies, I grew more interested in the connection between physics and biology, especially in how physical principles can help us better understand living systems and enhance medical technologies. I knew I wanted a programme that would allow me to explore both the theoretical foundations of biophysics and their practical applications.
The master’s programme in Engineering Physics stood out to me because of its strong academic reputation and its interdisciplinary focus. I was especially drawn to the opportunity to work on real-world problems and gain skills relevant to both research and industry. Additionally, I had previously spent a year in Stockholm as an exchange student, which made this decision even easier. I really enjoyed the city, its international environment, and the opportunities it offers in the scientific and technological fields.
What are some of your favourite courses so far?
So far, I’ve especially enjoyed Cellular Biophysics, where we study transport processes within cells and across cell membranes using physical and mathematical models. What I particularly liked was how well these models describe such complex processes at very small scales, and how naturally theory translates into experiments.
I also found Experimental Biophysics quite fascinating, as it focuses on spectroscopic methods for studying biomolecules and their dynamics. In the lab sessions, for example, we worked with techniques such as NMR and FCS, which are widely used in biomedicine and life sciences. It was impressive to see how these methods are built on fundamental physics principles and applied in both medical and research contexts.
One of the highlights for me has been a project course carried out at SciLifeLab, one of Sweden’s leading centres for molecular biosciences, where I had the opportunity to work closely with a research group. The project focused on using microfluidic systems to study nanoscale biological particles, with potential applications in diagnostics and drug delivery. This experience gave me the opportunity to apply physics concepts to a real biomedical problem through experimental work and data analysis.
How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?
One of the biggest differences I’ve noticed is the structure of the academic system. In Spain, the academic year is usually divided into two semesters, with several courses running simultaneously and a strong emphasis on final exams, which can make it challenging to focus deeply on each subject.
At KTH, each semester is divided into two study periods, typically with fewer courses at a time. This structure allows you to concentrate more on each subject and manage your workload more effectively.
Another key difference is the teaching approach. There is a stronger focus on continuous assessment, group projects, and practical assignments rather than on a single final exam. I also really value the close, approachable relationship between students and professors, which creates a more interactive, collaborative learning environment.
What do you want to do after graduating?
At the moment, I’m still exploring my future path, as I’m genuinely interested in both academia and industry. On one hand, I’m considering pursuing a PhD to continue working in research, particularly in areas related to biophysics or medical imaging. On the other hand, I’m also curious about opportunities in industry, such as in the medical technology or pharmaceutical sectors.
With the knowledge and skills I have gained during my bachelor’s and now through my master’s studies at KTH, I feel well prepared to pursue either path and keep my options open as I continue to discover where my interests lie.
How is student life in Stockholm?
Student life in Stockholm is very vibrant and international, especially at KTH. Students are part of a “chapter” depending on their programme—in my case, the F (Physics) Chapter—which plays a big role in student life. Our chapter organises a wide range of activities, from bouldering sessions to weekly pubs where students regularly get together.
There are also many student clubs to join, depending on your interests. For example, the KTH Outdoor Club offers trips and activities that let you explore nature and discover some of Sweden's most beautiful landscapes.
At the beginning of the academic year, I would highly recommend joining the International Reception organised by the KTH student union. It’s a great opportunity to meet people in the same situation, from all over the world, and to take part in a variety of activities—from city tours to karaoke and cooking nights. It really helps you settle in and build your social circle from the start.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?
If you’re curious and motivated, KTH gives you the space to really challenge yourself and grow both personally and professionally.
You’ll benefit from a high-quality education with strong links to both research and industry, and you’ll study alongside people from all over the world, which makes the experience even richer. And of course, living in Stockholm is a big part of it too—it’s an amazing city where you can enjoy nature, student activities, and city life all at once.
