Ask Roberto questions about KTH and read more about his decision to study at KTH, thoughts about Sweden, advice to prospective students and his plans for the future.

Hej, I am Roberto, and I come from Milan, Italy. Currently, I am attending my master's programme in Engineering Materials Science at the School of Industrial Engineering and Management. I achieved my bachelor's degree in Engineering Materials Science and Nanotechnology from Politecnico di Milano (Polimi), Milan, Italy. My hobbies mainly consist of travelling, practising different sports activities and discovering new cultures.

Why did you choose this master's programme at KTH?

I chose KTH primarily for its internationally acclaimed high-quality education and research in my field. KTH has a really high rank for Material Science and, together with the lively multicultural atmosphere of Stockholm as a city, made me desire to move and study here.

Furthermore, I read about the great attention that KTH reserves to the welfare of its students and to sustainability topics in which I am really interested, therefore I decided to move here for my studies.

What are the best aspects of your programme?

The strength of my programme is a perfect combination between theoretical knowledge and a practical approach. Together with the chance of working in a group with other students and having projects based on real industrial problems, it gives a complete education that prepares us for future work experiences.

Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme? If Yes, which track and why?

My specialisation is Materials and Process Design (MDNA). This track focuses mainly on the design approach for metallic materials, linking thus properties to structure and processes. Although my choice, I have the chance to attend courses more related to the processes themselves.

My choice was mostly due to the fact that I did not think to have a deep background in metallurgy when I started my master's and this track gave me the opportunity to have some initial courses to have a refresh of the most important aspects of the metallurgy.

What are some of your favourite courses so far?

I really enjoyed Advanced Course In Materials Design and Advanced In Process Science because they made me work on different projects actual from a research point of view and, in my opinion, gave me a lot from an educational point of view.

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

There are several differences between my previous and current studies. The main substantial difference is that at KTH, there are more hands-on practical teaching sessions, and it is no only focus on the theoretical aspects. Further, the atmosphere between students and professors is definitively "friendly", which I believe is amazing because this enhances and encourages everybody to raise questions and get a deeper understanding of the subjects.

How is student life in Stockholm?

The student life is great. There are diverse cultures, a lot of wonderful places to discover and chances to do different activities. Stockholm is a livable city that offers a lot of things to do for each taste. The students are really from all over the world, and this is great to get to know different culture and make great friendships.

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?

My time here has been amazing and rewarding. I have grown so much and pushed myself out of my comfort zone, getting to know many new friends and getting out of my daily routine. I had the chance to participate in several student events despite the covid situation and get a summer internship, which I believe is really important for my future. I am super happy with the choice I made moving here.

What do you want to do after graduating?

I would love to proceed to further expertise with a PhD, maybe in a partnership with a company since I am really fascinated by the research world and thus contribute to the scientific progress.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master's studies?

I found KTH to be above all my expectations. The education and the life outside the campus are amazing, and I would suggest you all come and start studying at KTH. I know that it can be a tough decision before moving here, but I can assure you that you will not regret this experience.
