Francesca
Francesca is 23 years old and comes from Italy. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, but she is now studying the master’s program in Sustainable Digitalisation. In her free time, she enjoys staying active doing different sports, such as playing tennis, swimming, or doing yoga. Moreover, she really loves hiking in the Alps or taking long walks around the city or in nature.
Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
I have always been interested in sustainability, but I felt it was completely missing from my previous engineering studies. That’s why, when I discovered this master’s program that combines exactly sustainability and computer science, I immediately thought it was the perfect match for me. Moreover, I’ve always wanted to live abroad for a few years, and Stockholm was my top choice thanks to its culture, endless opportunities, and its sense of calmness.
What are the best aspects of your programme?
Without a doubt, the best thing about the program is the sense of community. Since there are only about twenty students between the first and second year, we’ve really had the chance to get to know everyone and spend great time together. Moreover, the course coordinators are always there for us and attentive to students' needs, and they often organise activities and events to socialise. As for the study plan, it’s great that there are several elective courses to choose from, so you can really customise your education based on your interests.
How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?
The courses have a more relaxed study pace, and you only take two courses at the same time. This helps a lot to focus well on the subject and learn the topics by dedicating the right amount of time to them, which wasn't possible when taking four or five courses simultaneously at my previous university. Moreover, there aren't many lectures during the week; instead, most of the studying happens at home, reading papers, completing assignments and projects. In fact, one major difference is that for many lectures, you need to arrive already prepared, having read the literature beforehand, so you can discuss it in class. Finally, the study periods of just seven weeks allow for condensed yet effective learning.
How is student life in Stockholm?
Stockholm is truly the ideal city for every student. It offers many opportunities for all kinds of interests. For example, nature is an integral part of the city, allowing outdoor enthusiasts to reach it in no time. At the same time, there are plenty of events, concerts, clubs, and pubs downtown to go out and have fun with friends in the evening. The city also organises many free cultural events, and you can find student discounts almost everywhere (which is super important for public transport!). Being a European capital, it has efficient services and public transport, making it very easy to get around either by bus/metro or by bike. Plus, it’s not too big, so it’s rarely chaotic, and you can truly enjoy everything the city offers without feeling overwhelmed.
Finally, it offers plenty of job opportunities upon graduation, as it is home to many companies and startups, giving you the chance to start exploring the professional world even while you’re still studying.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?
To future students, I would say that studying at KTH is a fantastic idea. A master’s here offers you so many opportunities, both educationally and socially, that it is almost hard to keep up with everything that is going on. I’d suggest starting to prepare for the application early, reading all the requirements carefully and contacting the coordinators if there are any doubts; everyone is always very helpful. Moreover, I would advise participating in all the webinars offered by KTH, because they are incredibly useful for preparing the application, getting to know the program, and once accepted, they provide plenty of advice on how to live and find housing in Sweden.
Also, it’s important not to worry if you’re moving alone, because at the beginning of the year, there are many activities organised specifically to socialise and make new friends. Finally, I’d wish them the best of luck!
