From biomass based carbon nanospheres to supramolecular smart polymer systems

Project information

Carbon is a unique element considering the number of different carbonaceous structures and their fascinating properties. This has led to huge and accelerating research interest in different carbon structures and their applications. One interesting carbon structure is the carbon nanosphere consisting of curved graphite flakes. During this process we will utilize and develop microwave assisted reactions for production of biobased carbon nanospheres, which can be further oxidized to graphene oxide type carbon dots. These carbon structures are then utilized as property enhances in polymer composites and blends or in biomedical applications aiming at e.g. creating materials with improved properties like barrier and mechanical properties or bioactivity. The potential of these materials in enormous and possible further applications and material formulations are numerous. The project is financed by VR.
