Exploring the use of cellulose oxalate to reinforce thermoplastics
Project description
In collaboration with the start-up company FineCell Sweden AB, this project explores the use of a novel type of microcrystalline powder as reinforcement in thermoplastics. The technology that FineCell has patented produces a cellulose derivative called cellulose oxalate through a reaction between cellulose and oxalic acid. This results in highly crystalline cellulose with carboxylic groups which also enables further valorization to nanocellulose. In this project, an investigation of the effect of charge on the mechanical properties of the composites and the compatibility of the cellulose oxalate with different types of plastics is carried out. Adding cellulose oxalate in plastic can enable us to upgrade recycled plastic or reduce the total amount of plastic required but still retain good mechanical properties.
