Bio-polymers for coating and energy storage devices

The demand for better energy storage systems and devices such as batteries will continue to grow in different markets including electric transport and vehicles. The project aims to improve the performance and sustainability of energy storage devices using novel organic materials and composites.

Project description

The new generation of energy storage devices will be significantly better in terms of performance and sustainability in the production and recycling processes. Progress will rely on the development of more sophisticated cell components such as electrodes and separators for the next-generation batteries and other chemical energy storage devices. In lithium-ion cells, several substantial issues have to be resolved including the low energy density and the complicated recycling process. As part of this project, we aim to improve the organic components of the cells to address the issue at the interface of the active electrode components with the electrolyte.

Particularly, novel bio-based polymers from natural resources (e.g. lignin from wood) will be studied and tested in batteries. Moreover, green synthesis of chemicals from low-value feedstock, including lignin, for versatile polymer applications in coatings and energy storage devices will be investigated.
