Background:

During several years the Center for Studies of Military and Society ( CSMS ), has developed a number of projects and conferences focusing on military professionalism. This has been a strategy for The Swedish Armed Forces to engage with society and continuously be updated on research relevant for their operations.

The aim of this project was to identify constituents of military competence. As theoretical frame, Ellström’s (1996) multi-dimensional and situation-focused concept of “competence-in-use” was used. The empirical part consisted of a unique material of 28 narratives of first-person experiences of international operations were analyzed. The narratives origins from real life experiences of Swedish soldiers serving in operations in Afghanistan and Mali 2002-2015. Currently, the project is in a reporting phase.

The project built on Prof. Kaulio’s previous research on Leadership Studies Using the Critical Incident Technique (CIT) .
