Associate Professor in Environmental impact analysis
School of Architecture and Built Environment at KTH
Subject field
Environmental impact analysis
Subject description
The subject environmental impact analysis encompasses theoretical, methodological, and applied research for environmental assessment of projects, plans, and programs. Its core focus is on developing and critically examining how environmental aspects are integrated into planning and decision-making processes to promote sustainable development, with attention to both content and practical application. The subject also includes analysis of how knowledge, methods, and tools are used at various stages of the process, and how these contribute to and influence decision-making, implementation, and follow-up. By employing a range of qualitative and quantitative methods for environmental systems analysis and decision support, the field makes ecological, climate-related, and other sustainability-critical knowledge available for planning purposes.
The research is conducted within a context where both Swedish and international perspectives are central. Collaboration with the public sector and the business community is crucial for its relevance and implementation. With an increasing focus on emerging sustainability challenges, such as climate adaptation, digitalization, circular solutions, and equity, the field contributes to the development of future practice, integrated planning processes, and the knowledge required for sustainable urban and regional development.
Duties
Duties include teaching, course development, and examination at both undergraduate and advanced levels within the subject area and related fields. The associate professor is expected to actively contribute to the development of courses and degree programs at the department and to provide relevant links to society for the student groups involved. It is also crucial that teaching is closely linked to current research to foster a research-integrated educational environment. Teaching, including supervision of degree projects, is conducted in both Swedish and English. Initially, it accounts for approximately 50% of the position but is subject to adjustment based on the department's needs. Administrative and supervisory tasks related to teaching may also be included.
Research duties involve conducting independent research within the subject area and actively seeking and securing external research funding. The associate professor is expected to contribute to the department’s development and the academic environment by initiating and participating in research collaborations with other research groups within the department and across KTH. Collaboration with external stakeholders, nationally and internationally, as well as with industry and the public sector, is a vital component in grounding, developing, and realizing the impact of the research. The associate professor is expected to establish and develop independent and internationally recognized research. Duties also include seeking external funding for, and supervising, doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers.
The position also entails active participation in academic activities at the department, the school, and KTH, including undertaking positions of trust as well as administrative and leadership roles within the department. The associate professor is also expected to contribute to the department's vision of playing a leading role in achieving KTH's goals regarding sustainable development and climate impact.
