Keeping track of recurrences to "bad regions" is a major difficulty in the theory of dynamical systems. By considering an explicit model I will illustrate how this difficulty naturally arises. In the setting of this model, the problem is to estimate the norm of (arbitrarily large) products of SL(2,R)-matrices, where many of the matrices are "good" and some of them could be "bad".
