About me
Per Berglund is full professor of Biochemistry, Director of the master programme Industrial & Environmental Biotechnology, Deputy Head of Department of Industrial Biotechnology and the academic liasion for the strategic university partnership between KTH and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Per Berglund did his PhD in Organic Chemistry, postdoc at University of Toronto, and started his academic career at KTH in 1997. He was the Deputy Dean of KTH with responsibility for education on the first, second and third cycles between 2010 -2019.
Field of Research & Teaching
Per Berglund's research addresses the main global challenge to ultimately achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. The research field, calledBiocatalysis, can contribute to solve several of the 17 global sustainable development goals. For this,Biocatalysis uses tools and principles from Nature to provide bio-based environmentally smart production systems.Biocatalysis involves engineering of enzymes and processes for sustainable synthesis of high-value chemical products. In the research projects, enzymology, protein engineering,in silicomolecular modelling and green organic chemistry are combined to tailor enzymes for industrial conditions.
Per Berglund is the Program Director of the Master's Program Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology (TIMBM, https://www.kth.se/en/studies/master/industrial-and-environmental-biotechnology), and teaches fundamental Biochemistry courses and Biocatalysis at the master's level.
