MWL - test facilities

MWL is the largest university centre in northern Europe for experimental work related to sound and vibration problems.

General

MWL is the largest university centre in northern Europe for experimental work related to sound and vibration problems. Here all types of measurements can be performed ranging from standard measurements of sound power or sound absorption to modal analysis and characterization of mufflers, vibration mounts and materials. MWL also has an aero-acoustic test rig and a large experience in investigations concerning fluid machinery noise, e.g., from fans. The laboratory is mainly used for research and teaching but can also be hired by external users. For such users we can offer measurement support and perform investigations concerning low noise designs.

The central part of the laboratory consists of four measurement rooms located in a row:

Anechoic room

Suitable for determination of sound power of sound sources, sound transmission through insulating partitions (coupled to the reverberation room) or other types of measurements that require free field conditions

Reverberation room

Suitable for determination of sound power of sound sources, acoustic absorption or sound transmission through insulating partitions (coupled to the anechoic room).

Shock and vibration room

The room has a shaker for vibration testing and a servo-hydraulic rig for measuring dynamic stiffness of structural components.

Semi-anechoic room

Suitable for determination of sound power of sound sources, especially for heavy machines, or other types of measurements that require free field conditions with a reflecting floor. Double doors linking the measurement rooms allow mounting of test objects for measurement of sound radiation and transmission through and from various structures in almost free or reverberant fields

Flow acoustic test rig

The flow acoustic test rig provides "quiet" air flow which allows measurements of acoustic properties of various objects like silencers, fans, ducts, compressors and more. The test objects can be located on the service floor or in any measurement room
