For supervisors and examiners

On this page, specific information is gathered aimed at those who are supervisors and examiners.

Requirements for the degree project

All students at the program "Master of Science in Engineering and in Education" write their final thesis in technology and learning at advanced level. This means that the degree project must fulfill both the requirements for an education for a civil engineer (technology) and the requirements for education for upper secondary school teachers (learning). The students may complete their thesis individually or in pairs with another student reading the same course. The assessment of degree projects is done with the support of the course plan's goals for each course and KTH's central goals.

Supervisor

At the program "Master of Science in Engineering and in Education", each degree project has two
supervisors, one of the supervisors having competence in technology / mathematics / chemistry / physics
and the other in learning/educational science. These supervisors are employed by KTH or Stockholm
University. Then you can also have a so-called external supervisor who is an employee of eg a company. The
external supervisor often possesses a great deal of expertise in the area of your task but has no formal
role in the degree work course. The supervisors are appointed by the course coordinator.

Instructions for the supervision
The supervisor's overall task is to, through their supervision, guide the student through the process and
to ensure that the degree project has the quality required to be approved. It is important that the
student and the two supervisors at an early stage match the forms of the work, because routines and
traditions regarding degree projects differ between divisions and institutions.
Note that the specification that the student submit at admission should be seen as a first draft and the
starting point for your supervision, but it usually needs to be concretized and refined.
We apply individual supervision or group guidance according to needs and opportunities.
It is the supervisors and the student themselves who together decide on the form of the supervision.
Arrange a meeting between the students, the supervisors and the examiner at the start of the work to
reconcile the forms of the work. The supervisors must check that the proposal for the thesis work meets the requirements for a degree
project in technology and education at the advanced level before it is submitted to the course
coordinator. It is strongly recommended that supervisors visit an external client to check the work.
Keep in touch with the student (s) - eg. shorter reconciliations every two weeks.
Report to the examiner and the course coordinator if the thesis's timetables do not agree.
Discuss the report's outline and content with the student.Recommend the student when the work is
considered ready for ventilation.

Instructions for the Examiner
The requirement for the examiner is that he/she must hold a teaching position at KTH and is considered to
have the examiner's competence in both technology and learning. The examiner must base his/her assessment
on the objectives of the syllabus and KTH's central goals (see above). The assessment must be based on
the written thesis report, the ventilation seminar, the student's opposition to other work and the process
of the thesis (which is obtained via the supervisors). Upon approval, the examiner must complete the
result report form (according to instructions on the form).

Course Administration
Admission and course registration
The student applies for the thesis course and is registered in connection with the course.

Result report form
In order for the student to be graded on the course, the result report form and the thesis report are sent
to the course coordinator. The examiner is responsible for establishing this document. Financial compensation for supervisor and examiner Normally, the HST-HPR is distributed so that 1/3 of the generated HST and HPR compensation shall go to each supervisor's
institutions.
1/3 of the generated HST and HPR compensation shall go to the examiner's institution. External assistant
supervisors at companies, schools or the like are not reimbursed.

For employees at KTH
Compensation for employees at KTH is available from the ITM education office, KTH. An Internal invoice is
sent to Leon Giles at ITM's educational office, when the degree project is examined. Please state REF LGILES KTHITM, name of supervisor and / or examiner as the invoice refers to the
student's name and social security number. For employees at Stockholm University Compensation for employees at Stockholm University is requested from the Department of Mathematics and
Natural Sciences Education (MND). This also applies to employees at Stockholm University who have been
supervisors for LT200X (or SA210X or KTEX4N).
