School of Architecture and the Built Environment, KTH

The School of Architecture and the Built Environment, ABE (Skolan för Arkitektur och samhällsbyggnad) is one of eleven schools at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). Our research and educational program regards the future of our societies; how cities, buildings and infrastructure will be designed and built, how institutions and regulatory systems should be developed to produce safe and sustainable living environments.

Security is an integral part of urban sustainability. A sustainable city is a place free from the fear of crime, where a feeling of security underpins a wider sense of place attachment and place attractiveness. The contribution of the School of Architecture and the Built Environment is to produce knowledge to meet the challenges demanded by urban sustainability goals. The seminar “Security matters” makes a direct contribution to the School’s activities by opening up a discussion about the role of security in the context of urban sustainability. Some of the relevant issues discussed in the seminar are, for instance, how does urban structure relates to crime, fear of crime and an individual’s decision to commit a crime? What are the challenges to plan cities that are both safe and sustainable?
