Urban and Regional Planning

Urban and Regional Planning focuses on strategic urban development, addressing the complex interplay between human activities, physical environments, and institutional contexts. Planning integrates expertise across social, technical, natural sciences and humanities to analyse and guide urban and regional change.

Climate change, gentrification, and socio-economic restructuring challenge cities and regions to rethink existing approaches and develop innovative strategies for sustainable urban development. Urban and regional planners operate within multi-scalar and cross-border contexts as well as in local districts collaborating with diverse stakeholders (including public administrations, private companies, NGOs, and citizens) to shape sustainable futures.

Through a combination of problem-based learning, theoretical and methodological training, you will be equipped with practical and theoretical skills for analysing, synthesising, and coordinating complex planning challenges. You will gain proficiency in systems thinking, and in applying both quantitative and qualitative methods to address issues like housing, transport, public space, health, safety, retail, and services.

Graduates are prepared for roles where they bridge disciplines and perspectives, communicate planning outcomes, and contribute to creating livable, equitable, and sustainable urban environments. They work in local authorities, regional development agencies, consultancy firms, and NGOs, tackling planning, policy-making, and strategic development at local, regional, and national levels.
