KTH Materials Platform

The KTH Materials Platform connects more than 1000 researchers in over 80 research groups and around 26 competence centres in six thematic areas related to materials issues.

Materials research themes

Materials research at KTH covers a very wide spectrum of materials and their applications. Activities can often be traced from a focus towards a specific application or industry such as mining, electronics, or the wood fiber industry. Scientific curiosity in combination with diverse opportunities for external funding has over the years resulted in a diversification of materials research. Broadly materials research at KTH can be classified into the following clusters of activities: :

  • Polymer materials - bio-based, synthetic and hybrids
  • Emerging materials - quantum materials, plasmonics, magnonics, HT superconductors
  • Materials for energy applications - storage, transmission, photovoltaics, catalysis
  • Sustainable materials - recycling, purification, design for circularity
  • Engineering materials - 3D printing, construction, alloys, infrastructure
  • Materials for information and communication technologies - photonics, thin films, silicon based technologies, magnetic materials
