On 1 Sept the research centre TECoSA (Center for Trustworthy Edge Computing Systems and Applications) inaugurated its new Edge computing testbeds – encompassing 5G networks and a software defined network with routing of data to a number of edge computing facilities.

All three of the new TECoSA testbeds provide different types and levels of ”edge computing” – the computing layer located between embedded systems and the cloud. Two of the testbeds are installed in R1, the former KTH reactor hall, deep underground. A number of routers mounted in the ceiling there connect to a private 5G network, as well as to a software defined network. The third testbed is located outdoors, utilising the macro 5G from Telenor.

What exactly does this new technology do, Martin Törngren, director of TECoSA?

”The three testbeds represent new generations of digital infrastructures, that encompass communication systems as well as advanced computer systems that can perform calculations. As edge computing systems they can add computing capacity where needed.”

Why are you using the reactor hall, R1?

“Apart from being an exciting venue and meeting place with historical scientific vibes, R1 also enables free experimentation with wireless communication in a totally shielded environment.”

What happens next? How will the testbed be used, and by whom?

“In the coming months we will be fine-tuning the installations and ramping up research using the testbeds. We will also start to work out a ‘usage model’ for external researchers and companies, likely to be implemented sometime next year. “

What was the best with the inauguration event?

“We are very happy for the attendence! Some 95 people came, including TECoSA partner representatives as well as a large number of other invited guests including other companies, research institutes, journalists and KTH representatives. The extensive cooperation that has gone into setting up the testbeds, and the demonstrations of them, clearly showed the potential and the interest in the testbeds.”
