Choose Latinate words instead of 'do', 'make' and 'get'

Many phrasal verbs include an imprecise verb or particle, such as 'do', 'make', 'get', 'up' and 'out'. In most cases, there is a better single-word, Latinate synonym you can choose instead.

Phrasal verbs and expressions with do, make, and get are less common in scientific writing, often because they do not provide the precision required . Therefore, in order to increase the level of formality in your scientific writing, try to use single-word Latinate synonyms if they exist and are understandable to your reader:

Less formal:

(1a) The use of interactive tools gets rid of many problems associated with traditional lectures.

More formal:

(1b) The use of interactive tools eliminates many problems associated with traditional lectures.

Less formal:

(2a) In this study, I will look into the use of touch-screen systems in restaurants.

More formal:

(2b) In this study, I will investigate the use of touch-screen systems in restaurants.

Less formal:

(3a) In order for the situation to get better, nurses need to do better tests.

More formal:

(3b) In order for the situation to improve, nurses need to develop better testing techniques.
