Georgios

Georgios came from Greece to pursue a master’s degree in Cybersecurity at the main campus of KTH. He's 26 years old and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Informatics and Telecommunication from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In his free time, he enjoys windsurfing, roller skating, ice skating and camping in nature. He loves skiing, and Sweden is a great country to have weekend breaks for this hobby.

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?

While searching for a master’s degree in cybersecurity, my objective was to find a programme which could teach me how to protect computer operating systems and networks from potential cyber-attacks and offer me hands-on experience.

The KTH master’s programme in Cybersecurity emphasises immersive experiences, giving students the real-world exposure they need to be truly effective and impactful in cybersecurity. With highly qualified faculty professors, cybersecurity labs, research facilities, and computing resources, KTH will enable me to develop into cybersecurity professional.

What are the best aspects of your programme?

By increasing awareness and concern over the growing cyber threats facing organisations, governments and individuals alike, KTH has created a new graduate degree programme in Cybersecurity.

While this programme is still in its infancy, KTH professors aim to train cybersecurity professionals with lifelong learning skills, competencies, and the ability to defeat adversaries from theoretical and tactical perspectives.

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

My undergrad studies in Athens focused on a theoretical matter of Computer Science and a practical matter to the extent of solving complex programming models as assignments to be submitted. On the contrary, the KTH master’s degree divides every course into theoretical and practical learning.

The day starts with the theoretical science behind a topic and then elevates the student experience to a practical lab experience. In contrast, students can implement what they were taught during the course and get experience from actual case studies. This allows the students to put the theory into practice and work together in teams in an international environment. Working with groups and not as an individual during my undergrad enables my classmates and me to improve our collaboration skills. In addition, the diversity at KTH, contrary to my undergrad studies where 99 % of the students were Greeks, improves students' intellectual engagement, self-motivation and academic skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving in a more multinational and diverse way.

What do you want to do after graduating?

After completing my master’s degree in Cybersecurity, my short-term goal is to become a Cybersecurity analyst. I will use my programming skills to develop new algorithms for data protection and filtering to safeguard sensitive information. KTH master’s degree will play a critical role in achieving my goal, equipping me with the relevant programming knowledge, skills, and familiarity with industry-standard platforms that will make me a competitive candidate in the job market. This programme will pave the way for new opportunities, allowing me to apply my skills to encryption and secure vital information for private companies, governmental entities, and security authorities. As a long-term goal, I would like to have a senior-level position as a Cybersecurity architect to provide my services to big corporations in planning, designing, testing, and implementing the whole organisation’s a computer and network security infrastructures.
