Hannah

Hannah is from Austria and earned a bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering before enrolling at KTH for her master's in Engineering Mechanics. In her free time, she enjoys running, hiking and bouldering with her friends.

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?

During my bachelor’s studies in Mechanical Engineering, I developed a strong interest in structural analysis and simulation, which motivated me to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanics. For this reason, I started searching for master’s programmes specialising in this area. When I heard about the Engineering Mechanics master’s programme at KTH, I was impressed by the wide range of courses offered across different fields of mechanics. I appreciated the flexibility to specialise through the wide selection of elective courses, tailoring my studies to my interests. Additionally, learning about the programme’s reputation for top-ranked research and its strong industry collaborations finally confirmed my decision to study here at KTH.

What are the best aspects of your programme?

One of the best aspects of the programme is the practical relevance of its courses, as many combine theory, laboratory work, and project-based assignments. They are also closely aligned with industry applications. For example, we conducted a modal analysis of industry prototypes as part of a group project in one of our courses.

I also really value the strong sense of collaboration among the students here. We are constantly encouraged to work together, which creates a very engaging and motivating learning environment. The programme also fosters a strong community through small traditions, such as regular fika gatherings in the Solid Mechanics track room, where students take turns bringing something to share. Altogether, this creates a very supportive learning environment that makes studying both effective and enjoyable.

Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme? Which track and why?

I have chosen the Solid Mechanics track, as it is the area I am most interested in. It also closely aligns with the courses in my bachelor’s program, where I already worked on projects related to this field. I really appreciate the opportunity to further deepen my knowledge of the finite element method, as the Solid Mechanics track offers a wide range of specialised courses in this area. The FEM simulation courses I have taken so far have provided a strong balance between theory and practical skills through project-based assignments. I find this very valuable for my future career, since these competencies are relevant across many engineering fields.

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?

So far, I have truly enjoyed my time and studies here at KTH. Academically, I have deepened my knowledge in my main areas of interest, especially in the finite element method. The courses and projects have allowed me to build both a strong theoretical foundation and practical skills, which is exactly what I was looking for when I chose this programme. At the same time, I really value the collaborative learning environment. I also appreciate how accessible and supportive the academic environment is, both among students and with faculty.

Outside of studies, the student life in Stockholm has been a great experience. Through the student union (THS) and different student activities, I have had many opportunities to meet international students and build friendships. In addition, I really enjoy the balance Stockholm offers between city life and nature and have been on several hikes in the archipelago with friends. Overall, I am very happy with my time at KTH so far and truly appreciate the combination of high-quality education and an active international student life.
