Ion
Ion is from Greece and holds a master’s degree in systems engineering from a French Grande École d’Ingénieurs. He is currently enrolled in a master’s programme in Naval Architecture. In his free time, he enjoys swimming, hiking, camping, and watching his favourite team’s games.
Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
I have always wanted my career to be related to the sea, and after completing an internship in underwater robotics, I decided to pursue Naval Architecture. I chose to come to Sweden to experience a new country and benefit from the wide range of elective courses and specialisation tracks at KTH, which allow students to tailor the programme to their interests. In addition, I am discovering what winter really means.
What are the best aspects of your programme?
In my opinion, the wide range of courses offered, complemented by the option to follow specialised tracks, is the programme’s strongest aspect. Such flexibility allows students to explore a broader range of fields and tailor their studies to their post-graduation goals.
Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme? Which track and why?
I chose Fluid Mechanics because it was a subject I had not studied before and I had always found interesting. So, it was the perfect opportunity to discover the basics of this complex subject.
What are some of your favourite courses so far?
My favourite course is Naval Design, as it allows us to work on a project from start to finish. This year, we are building a moth sailing boat, which involves designing, manufacturing, and optimising a complex mechanical system.
How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?
In my previous studies, we did not have as much flexibility to shape our learning as we do at KTH, which I really appreciate. Furthermore, my earlier education was a bit more theoretical, with more time spent in lectures rather than working on projects and assignments where one can apply what they learn in class.
How would you describe your time at KTH so far?
It has been a lot of fun and very interesting! One thing I appreciate a lot is how easy it is to talk to professors, and the projects let us go beyond what we see in lectures. Besides studies, there are students from all over the world, and this multicultural environment makes the whole experience much more enriching.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?
Go for it! There is a wide variety of master's programmes that can be tailored to suit you best. You should check out the website, as it provides all the necessary information for moving to Sweden. The webinars offered by KTH are also very helpful, as well as the “Connect with KTH students” initiative, which is an excellent way to chat with current students and gain firsthand insights after you’ve been admitted.
