Chemical composition

The chemical composition of a material has wide-ranging effects on everything from formed phases to corrosion resistance.

The chemical composition of a material has wide-ranging effects from formed phases to physical properties like corrosion resistance. Additionally, the spatially resolved analysis of the chemical composition allows the study of processes like diffusion and can be used for phase identification in combination with crystal structure (link to Crystal structure) investigation.

There are two different general types of chemical analysis methods available in our laboratory. The first is energy or wavelength dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (link to EDS/WDS) that allows the spatially resolved analysis of a surface’s chemical composition with micrometer resolution. The second available method is the chemical analysis of the gas phase via mass spectrometry in combination with our thermal analysis equipment (link to TA).
