What does QA do in Dolby? The reality of QA in practical vs industrial world.

Abstract:

In this talk, I will share my experience in what QA does in Dolby, and how it differs with other companies I have been working with. I will describe what QA means in the organization and introduce the way we test the software. I will also introduce different test methodologies applied on different projects. During the period of my career in Dolby as QA engineer rising to the leadership role, I will also share how QA adapts and adopt to the company transition from waterfall, V-Model to Agile SCRUM. I will also share the challenges, the success and most importantly lessons learnt from this transition. Finally, I will also share briefly on my research thesis background which I have (and still active) been doing since my PhD days - spectral debugging, which could be of interest to researchers in the area for any open collaboration.

Bio:

Dr Jason Lee Hua Jie has been practicing in the software testing field for more than 11 years; both in the research and industry platforms.
He received his Bachelor of Information Technology (HONS.) majoring in Software Engineering from the Multimedia University, in 2005. He started working in the software industry as a Software Engineer and Software Validation Engineer with Motorola Technology and iWOW Pty. Ltd. respectively. He did his PhD in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, University of Melbourne. His research thesis is focused on spectral debugging, which uses test coverage information to help programmers locate bugs effectively.

He has been working with DOLBY Laboratories as a Senior Test Lead.  He has worked in delivering various scopes of the embedded software projects, with local and off-shore teams and most recently in mobile apps. This includes managing user acceptance testing of outsource teams. He is also involved in testing projects in different software methodologies; namely waterfall, V-model and Agile scrum. He is also a hands-on person where he has been heavily involved in the development of test automation framework for several embedded audio projects.

He is actively pursuing research in his free time and contributes to the software engineering research field as program committee and technical reviewers for international conferences namely COMPSAC 2012, APSEC 2012, TAIC PART 2013, ASWEC 2013-14, ASE 2014 and Advances in Software Engineering Journal. He is currently supervising Masters students in the area of software testing and big data in UWS. He also serves as a Casual Tutor in Macquarie University for Software Engineering subject. He was invited regularly as guest lectures for software engineering subjects in the universities in Australia.
