About me

I, Lena Gumaelius, am employed as associate professor in Engineering Education within the Department of STEM Education at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology). I am interested in investigating how we can make engineering and technology education more attractive and accessible to everyone. Currently, my main passion is to work on research questions related to how we can design engineering education so that our graduates are equipped to drive the societal changes needed for a sustainable future. In my role as the director of KTH's Global Development Hub, I have the opportunity to address this issue in an international (African) context.

Other research areas in my portfolio include exploring ways to increase interest in technology and natural sciences. Within this field, I am involved in the Marie Curie project SellSTEM, which examines how strong spatial skills can facilitate studies in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Development of technology education in schools has also been a part of my research interest for several years. I obtained my docent title in 2019, specializing in "attractiveness and outreach in STEM." My background is in chemical engineering, and I completed my Ph.D. in the field of biotechnology. Throughout my academic career, I have held various leadership roles. Currently, I lead the activities at KTH's Global Development Hub.

From 2020 to 2023, I served as Vice-Chancellor and Acting Rector at Mälardalen University. In 2019, I had the opportunity to undertake a Fulbright scholarship that allowed me to engage in a guest visit to Virginia Tech in the USA. Between 2011 and 2017, I worked as the Head of the Department of Learning and later as the Head of the School for Technology and Learning Sciences at KTH, which was dissolved at the end of 2017. From 2006 until 2012, I served as the Director of Vetenskapens Hus, a highly interesting and exciting role that sparked my interest in pedagogy and research in this field.
