Abstract
Can sound increase anthropomorphism of products? What methods can we use to test sound in product design, particularly in trying to explore anthropomorphism? I will present some recent, in-progress work on the methods I’ve been exploring and the results of several studies conducted into robot sounds. My aims in this work are several: 1. Explore sound’s contribution to anthropomorphism, 2. Explore methods in product sound design and user experience testing, and 3. Explore sound in robots, with the aim of improving trust and likeability.
Bio
KC Collins is an Associate Professor in the School of Information Technology. Her work focuses on sound and music in technology, and explores how new technologies impact our auditory experience. This research has included studies of sound on smart tables, mobile phones, video games/VR, and slot machines. She is a member of the Royal Society of Canada's College of New Scholars and recipient of multiple research awards. She is also a filmmaker interested in interactive narratives, and has worked extensively in areas of sonic branding, user experience and human-computer interaction.
