“Biotechnology holds the key to solving many challenges”
Hello there, He Li!
He Li is a Food Science and Technology researcher with the Division of Glycoscience at KTH’s School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health (CBH) and is currently involved in research focusing on developing biotechnological solutions for sustainable food systems, renewable materials, and energy production. She also contributes to the organisational efforts of KTH FOOD.
Combating unsustainability in the food system
Creating sustainability within the food system is an issue that is faced by the world today. He Li tackles issues of unsustainability in the food system in her research. “Unsustainable food production exerts an unpredictable impact on humans, animals, and all ecosystems. Climate change presents significant challenges to our food systems, exacerbating crop yield fluctuations and endangering food security. Furthermore, food loss and waste compound issues relate to unsustainable development. To effectively address the needs of a growing population and align with sustainable development goals, prioritizing food production and minimizing food waste are essential imperatives,” she comments.
Researching to promote change and create a greener future
As a researcher with experience spanning biotechnology, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry, He Li’s passion lies in sustainability, where she’s committed to leveraging expertise to advance sustainable practices and contribute to a greener future. “Presently, my attention is directed towards researching and developing biotechnological solutions for sustainable food systems, renewable material, and energy production. Undoubtedly, progress in these areas depends on collective effort and requires each of us to advocate for change step by step,” she elaborates.
When asked about how her research can contribute to solving the issues facing the food system, He Li responded: “I believe that biotechnology holds the key to solving many challenges. A two-pronged approach that considers converting food waste into value-added products while developing cutting-edge technologies to improve agricultural health and productivity. I believe that scientific inquiry and technological innovation will make significant contributions to shaping a more sustainable and prosperous society in the future.”
Understanding food systems- a collective mission
He Li emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing the multifaceted challenges of sustainability within the food system. When asked to comment on being affiliated with KTH FOOD, He Li replied, “the KTH FOOD Center is dedicated to fostering sustainable and healthy food systems by uniting scientists with specialized expertise and passion in this domain. Collaborating with professionals from diverse backgrounds at the KTH FOOD not only offers invaluable learning opportunities but also creates opportunities for collaborative ventures. This deeper engagement enables me to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the food systems, transcending beyond technical aspects. As an active member of KTH FOOD, I am excited to contribute my expertise to our collective mission.”
Through her research, and collaborative efforts, He Li aims to advance the frontiers of science, and champions for a more sustainable and resilient future for generations to come.
