Sustainable development, the challenge of the future

Published Nov 26, 2009

The course catalogue for the university’s educations is now ready and KTH can present two new educational programs which specialise in sustainable development There are two courses offered, one of which is a completely new 5-year civil engineering programme in energy and the environment and a two-year Master’s programme in sustainable urban development.

Climate and other environmental issues are creating a number of major challenges for society. In turn, this requires competent and well-educated engineers, something which KTH has realised and is now investing heavily in.

“I am extremely pleased that KTH, prior to the autumn term 2010, is able to launch two new educational programmes which will focus on sustainable development; one of the major challenges for the 21st-century. The efficient use of energy, new energy technologies and sustainable urban development are examples of key areas and it is my hope that these programmes will attract many interested students,” says Professor Eva Malmström Jonsson, vice-President of KTH, responsible for the role of education in society.

The new civil engineering programme in energy and the environment will educate engineers who possess a solid scientific and technical background, a broad understanding of energy and the environment and an ability in the specialisation chosen.

“The new civil engineering programme will provide students with the possibility of choosing between six different specialisations. The students will be able to choose among specialisations which focus on both energy technology, environmental technology and sustainable urban development,” says Professor Göran Finnveden who has led the workgroup that developed the new programme.

One of the specialisations in the new civil engineering programme is environment and planning which is also a specialisation in a new two-year Master’s programme “Sustainable Urban Planning and Design”. The programme is an exciting cooperation between architects, urban planners and environmental strategists.

“The new education in environment and planning will deal with sustainable urban development. It will provide students with the tools to both react to today’s situation, to plan for long-term sustainable development and to evaluate the contribution of actions to sustainable development, says Professor Örjan Svane who is responsible for this new educational direction.
