KTH alumni receive award for Turbo-3G, successful worldwide

Published Oct 27, 2009

Being a doctoral candidate at KTH can lead to a lot, such as an exciting job. Or to SEK 300,000 when you receive the distinction awarded jointly by Vinnova and Ny Teknik magazine. Stefan Parkvall and Erik Dahlman can confirm this because yesterday they received the 2009 Major Technology Award (Stora Teknikpriset) for their contribution to Turbo-3G technology which has become a worldwide success.

The breakthrough for Turbo-3G was enormous. This technology forms an important part of the mobile broadband network used in more than 100 countries, where it increases the data transfer rate in the network up to 100 times.

It is no wonder that Stefan Parkvall and Erik Dahlman, currently radio experts at Ericsson, are rewarded for their contribution. They have played major roles in the development of this technology.

Both of them have previously defended their doctoral theses at KTH, and Stefan Parkvall has been involved in research on signal processing in the field of mobile wireless communication.

Stefan Parkvall has also been a very important link between Ericssons’ research department and KTH.

“I sometimes have to stop and kick myself; that little HSPA modem conceals the breakthrough that I suddenly discovered, one evening. It is a little strange”, Stefan Parkvall speaking to Ny Teknik magazine.

Björn Ottersten, Professor at the KTH School of Electrical Engineering, makes the following comment on the fact that KTH plays an important role for the telecommunications industry.

“Ten of my former doctoral students are currently employed by Ericsson and this is no accident”, says Björn Ottersten.
