KTH Students Win Engineering Gold and Bronze

Published Aug 30, 2011

The European BEST Engineering Competition in Istanbul awarded first and third place prizes to two teams representing KTH.

The European BEST Engineering Competition (EBEC) gathered 104 of the Continent’s most promising technology students on August 10, 2011. The competition assigns an engineering problem to participants working in teams, requiring them to apply technical and soft skills, cultural awareness and creativity to find a solution.

The competition was divided into two categories: Team Design and Case Study. After ten days of intensive work, the KTH Royal Institute of Technology’s team took the top award in the Case Study category, while the second Swedish team came in third place in the Team Design category.

The winning Case Study team included KTH students Anirudh Ranganathan, Girish Kasturi, Swetha Ravi Kumar and Vivetha Joshna. The Team Design participants were Louise Lindblad, Karl Hansson, Jonas Lindberg and David Hultman.

“The best thing about the competition was getting to know so many new, interesting people from different countries. Making contacts all over the world is just as important and as much fun as the actual competition experience,” Hultman said.

A total of 26 teams—13 in each category—advanced to the finals. The Swedish participants had already qualified for the final in a Nordic competition held in Trondheim, Norway.

“Time management is one of the most difficult things about a competition like this—it’s difficult to determine how much time you can or should spend on thinking, and how much time you need for the actual design process,” Hultman added.

The engineering competition is organised by European student organisations in the Board of European Students of Technology (BEST), in cooperation with companies and universities. The EBEC 2012 final competition will be held in Zagreb, Croatia.
