Published Dec 09, 2009

Mathias Uhlén, professor of biochemistry at KTH, has recently been nominated as the “Most Entrepreneurial Scientist of Sweden 2009” by The Technopolicy Network and Vinnova. He is receiving the award in competition with eminent scientists such as Saied Esmaeilzadeh, Stockholm University, Mats Leijon, Uppsala University, Bengt Kasemo and Owe Orwar, both from Chalmers University of Technology.

In their evaluation, the jury - which consists of representatives from Volvo, The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Vinnova, The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and The Association of Swedish Higher Education – took into consideration parameters such as scientific merits and entrepreneurial excellence.

Excerpts from The Technopolicy Network press communiqué:
“The final winner, Professor Mathias Uhlén, has an impressive career. He has developed the use of affinity tags for purification of recombinant proteins in the late eighties, worked on automated solid phase applications using streptavidin-coated magnetic micro spheres and co-developed a new strategy for DNA analysis called Pyrosequencing. Professor Uhlén has more than 300 publications and is currently working on the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) program, with the aim to systematically map the human proteome. He has founded a great number of companies, including Pyrosequencing AB (now Biotage AB), Affibody AB, SweTreeGenomics AB, Magnetic BiosolutionsAB, Creative Peptides AB and Atlas Antibodies AB.”

The Technopolicy Network is a network of researchers, practical operators, regional development organisations and company incubators in North America, Europe and Asia.”
