Exploring Residential Location Choices: A Pre-Study for Housing Planning in the Stockholm Region

Project title: Exploring Residential Location Choices: A Pre-Study for Housing Planning in the Stockholm Region
Project leader:  Qian Wang , SoM, KTH
Funder: Region Stockholm
Project period: 2025

This pre-study focuses on understanding the dynamics of residential location choices and their implications for regional planning. Residential location significantly influences social segregation, urban economic development, and transportation systems.

The research aims to explore the feasibility of a policy tool that integrates an activity-based model within the Land Use and Transport Interaction (LUTI) framework. This exploratory tool would use accessibility measures to predict residential location preferences while accounting for socioeconomic and built environment factors. By analysing joint decisions related to residential and activity patterns, the pre-study sets the foundation for addressing challenges in fostering mixed neighbourhoods and reducing segregation.

The methodology includes comprehensive literature reviews, data collection, and conceptual framework development, culminating in preliminary recommendations for policymakers. The outcomes will establish a foundation for innovative strategies to improve housing accessibility and equity in the Stockholm Region.
