Courses for Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Infrastructure

Water Technology provides specialisation in hydrology and hydraulic engineering, giving advanced knowledge of hydrological and hydrogeological processes, conceptualisation of hydrological environments, and engineering applications for surface and groundwater systems.

Courses include AE2201 Environmental Dynamics/Physical Processes  (water and solute transport), AE2610 Applied Hydrology  (e.g. urban hydrology), AE2612 Hydraulic Engineering  (hydraulic structures), and AE2107 Modeling of Water Systems , which introduces modelling tools for water-related processes and hydrological systems.

Environmental Geology and Hydrogeology meets the demand for engineers skilled in geology, hydrology, and environmental chemistry, for work on contaminated sites, project impacts on groundwater, and interactions between projects and geological conditions.

Courses include AE2801 Environmental Chemistry and Risk Assessment  (contaminant behaviour and risk assessment), AE2104 Environmental Measuring and Monitoring  (environmental measurement techniques including geophysical methods), AE2401 Engineering Geology  (analysis of geological and geotechnical issues), and AL2301 Applied Hydrogeology  (groundwater flow, contaminant transport, groundwater chemistry). An additional course is AL2608 Life Cycle Assessment , introducing life-cycle perspectives on natural resources.

Water and Wastewater Technology offers advanced knowledge in sanitary engineering and water resource management, including water supply, groundwater, and purification processes.

After AE2801 Environmental Chemistry and Risk Assessment , students take AE2304 Water and Wastewater Handling  as an introduction to sanitary engineering. Further courses include AL2301 Applied Hydrogeology  (groundwater aspects) and AE2302 Water Treatment Processes and Technology  (purification techniques for drinking water and wastewater). Additional recommended courses are AE2612 Hydraulic Engineering  and AE2610 Applied Hydrology  for hydraulic aspects of systems like sanitary sewers.

Environmental Information Analysis and Management, together with Environmental Systems Analysis, builds skills relevant to environmental impact assessments, planning, policy assessment, and designing remediation and monitoring programs. It focuses on data collection, environmental information processing, and tools for integrating knowledge into sustainable policy and planning.

Courses include AE2503 Environmental Data  (GIS tools for data analysis and modelling), AE2104 Environmental Measuring and Monitoring  (field surveys, geophysical methods, data evaluation), and AL2300 Natural Resources Management Tools  (spatial modelling, decision support using GIS and other tools). AE2107 Modelling of Water Systems  is an additional suitable course covering spatial hydrological modelling.

Sustainable Infrastructure deepens understanding of urban and rural development within the framework of the 2030 Agenda, examining societal transformation, context, actors, power structures, and sustainable infrastructure networks.

Courses include AG2143 Sustainable Rural and Urban Development  (concepts of societal progress and sustainable transformation), AG2141 Urban Infrastructure  (sociotechnical perspectives on infrastructure’s role in urban sustainability), and AG2148 Governance of Land and Water Resources  (long-term resource management).

Environmental Systems Analysis covers tools for evaluating environmental impacts from project to life-cycle perspectives.

The competence profile includes AE2501 Environmental Impact Assessment  (EIA) (environmental, social, and economic analysis of proposed developments, practical EIA work), AE2507 Strategic Environmental Assessment  (SEA) (integrating sustainability into plans, programs, and policies, including international practices), and AL2608 Life Cycle Assessment  (LCA) (assessing product/service impacts across the entire life cycle and practical LCA projects using industry tools). Studying EIA, SEA, and LCA in sequence is recommended for comprehensive skills in environmental planning and decision-making relevant to consultancy, government, and international organisations.

Sustainable Societies addresses sustainability from a social-ecological and policy perspective, situating technological knowledge within broader sustainability contexts. It strengthens the ability to relate different sustainability perspectives to specific fields and fosters multidisciplinary teamwork skills essential for transformative sustainability work.

Courses include AG2142 Political Economy for Environmental Planners  (global political and economic systems and alternative sustainability approaches), AL2511 Resilience Thinking in Sustainability planning  (systems thinking for adaptation and transformation, including resilience assessment projects), and AL2503 Planning for Environmental Justice in Social-Ecological Systems  (ecological resource equity, environmental justice strategies, and planning for inclusive sustainable resource use).
